The Website Development Process
Step 5: Publication
All of the development work for your site will take place on our
test server where you can monitor our progress. At some point you
will decide that your website is ready to be introduced to the world
and it will be set up at the address you have chosen.
In preparation for this we will have spoken to you about the options
for getting your own domain name and getting a host server, or using
free services that may be available to you. We do not sell domain
names or host server space, but we are more than willing to help
you through your selection of these things.
When your site is published it will include information
about your site (key search words and a description) that do
not appear on the screen but are used by search engines to categorize
your site and add it to their listings. It takes a couple of
days for the various computers around the world that form the
"backbone" of the Internet to become aware of your existence
but, after that, your site will be accessible from any computer
connected to the Internet, worldwide.
After Your site is Published ...
The number of visitors you get at your site will grow with time,
but you need to be patient because your site will be one of over
3 billion on the 'Net. The search engines generally list their
results according to the popularity of the sites as measured
by their "traffic" (number of visitors) so you will want to do
what you can to encourage people to visit your site.
Here are
some ways you can increase traffic:
1. Keep the content fresh. Visitors will not
return to your site if they see the same content each time. You
can set up a maintenance agreement with Tanapics
(prices start at $20 per month) if you plan to update your site
frequently, or we do simple "one off" changes to sites we have
developed at a rate of $30 per hour with a minimum charge of
$10.
2. Use your site address in print media - one your business card,
on all advertising. One advantage of this is that you can sometimes
reduce the amount you spend on print advertising by keeping your
ads smaller and referring people to your website for further
information.
3. Refer to your website and provide a link to it in your email
correspondence. Your website can become a valuable tool for introducing
yourself or your organization to others.
We do not recommend responding to ads that offer to post your
information on multiple search engines for a fee. For the most
part, search engines are designed to reject these services. You
can request your own links on most of the major search engines
and, since they tend to exchange inforamation, once you're listed
on a few of the main engines, you will find that you are listed
on most of them. For information about the popularity of various
search engines and how to raise your profile on them, we would
recommend that you visit SearchEngineWatch.com.
